The Treasury of Terpenes

Eco Therapy CBD Hemp Plants

Think of your favorite essential oils and how you feel when you inhale. Like lavender and its relaxing feeling? We can thank the terpene linalool. Enjoy the invigoration of orange oil? It’s from limonene.  Terpenes are primarily the source of your favorite plant scents and their homeopathic benefits.  And there’s a reason you’re attracted to certain scents at different seasons of your life. What your body needs naturally attracts you to the scents that can fill that need.

Amazingly, in cannabis, we have already identified 120 terpenes to date.  Lavender's linalool can be found in cannabis, as can lemon’s limonene.  In fact, in one cannabis flower, there can be 100 terpenes! This is why the entourage effect is so powerful: all the parts of the hemp plant, with all its terpenes, cannabinoids (of which CBD is one) and flavonoids, are meant to work together for the best therapeutic effect.  As discussed in the journal Frontiers of Plant Science, the best CBD oil comes from the whole plant vs. isolated CBD. It is not good for CBD to be alone, but to be amplified by all of its other plant partners - just as Mother Nature intended.

Terpenes work so synergistically with cannabinoids because they both bond to the endocannabinoid system, which runs throughout our entire body.  There are endocannabinoid receptors in our brain, organs, immune cells, glands and connective tissue. Terpenes and cannabinoids working together improve absorption and the overall therapeutic effects throughout our entire endocannabinoid system.  It is the whole entourage that makes the best CBD oil.

Both terpenes and cannabinoids are found in the cannabis flower’s trichomes, the delicate crystalline that make each bud sparkle.   The stronger the strain’s smell, the more terpenes are present. Behind the scenes, the scented terpenes are simulating biological and psychological chemical reactions.  Some stimulate creativity, mitigate pain, or alleviate anxiety. They can act as antioxidants, anti-inflammatories, anti-bacterials, and anti-virals. That’s why we included these specialized terpenes to those already present in our whole plant, full spectrum hemp CBD oil:

TERPENES THAT REVIVE

  • Limonene:  Found in hemp and citrus fruits, this terpene is a mood booster and stress mitigator. Researchers at Yamaguchi University found that inhaled limonene increases serotonin and dopamine levels, especially in the brain areas that control anxiety, depression, and OCD. In addition, limonene has been found to improve the absorption of other terpenes in our digestive tract and mucous membranes, as discovered by researchers at Hoshi University! It’s a perfect terpene for maximizing the absorption of all the benefits of our CBD vape pens and mints.

  • Humulene:  Another mood booster and stress reducer, this terpene is antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-proliferative, and antibacterial, as published in the journal Oxidative Medicine and Cellular Longevity.  It takes the best CBD oil and makes it even better. Humulene is found in hemp, ginseng, and sage, and we thought it a wise addition to the best CBD oil.

  • Pinene:  Researchers from the Universidade do Vale do Itajaí found pinene to be very effective in decreasing neuropathic pain. Pinene also prevents anxiety when administered at therapeutic levels.  It’s a powerful terpene that is found in hemp and pine trees, as well as rosemary and basil.  Perhaps this terpene is why a walk in the forest does our body and mind good.

TERPENES THAT RELAX

  • Bisabolol: A-bisabolol terpenes are mental and muscle relaxants, making it a perfect addition to our CBD for anxiety relief.  It is also analgesic, antioxidant, antimicrobial, and anti-inflammatory. This terpene is quite a cup of tea, being found in chamomile and hemp.

  • Neral:  Sedative and calming, neral activates our serotonin receptors and decreases pain sensation through antinociceptive action (that is, blocking sensory neurons from detecting pain), as discussed in the European Journal of Pharmacology.  It was hard to resist adding this special terpene to make the best CBD oil. This antiviral and antibacterial terpene is found in hemp and citrus fruits like orange, lemon and lime.

  • Caryophyllene: This is the only terpene we have discovered that acts like a cannabinoid!  It’s found in cannabis, cinnamon, oregano, black pepper and basil. Caryophyllene binds to CB2 receptors, which are primarily in our peripheral organs.  It works as both an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory in our endocannabinoid system. Researchers at the College of Medicine & Health Sciences, United Arab Emirates University, found this terpene to improve mood and treat anxiety and depression.  With so many benefits, we had to include this cannabinoid-like terpene with our CBD for anxiety relief!

TERPENES FOR REST

  • Linalool: Found in both lavender and hemp, linalool has been found to help our brain use adenosine, which is a hormone that helps us fall asleep.  Nursing researchers in Japan discovered that even if our sleep cycle is disrupted and we wake up, this terpene helps us to fall back asleep again.  It was the perfect addition to our CBD vape pens and mints for Rest.

  • Eucalyptol: This terpene from hemp and eucalyptus trees improves the brain’s sleep patterns, especially since it naturally crosses the brain-blood barrier.  According to Advances in Experimental Medicine and Biology, this antioxidant and anti-inflammatory terpene has been shown to treat cardiovascular and neurodegenerative diseases, as well as respiratory illness.

There is an amazing rainbow of benefits from terpenes, and the more we research, the more we discover. We have only scratched the surface of the pot of entourage gold at the end of this rainbow.

Our CBD vape pens and mints are precisely formulated with specific terpenes selected especially for their effects with our CBD oil. In contrast, most CBD gummies and edibles will not give you a terpene analysis, since these are typically made with a combination of strains.  You can view our independent, third-party tested lab results and see the exact terpenes and ingredients our batches.  Shop our CBD oil collection today and Revive, Relax and Rest assured you are getting the same formulation and effects every time.
